Richmond Neighborhood
Adopted Land Use Guidelines & Policies

Division MAIN ST. ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN GUIDELINES

In 2018, RNA adopted Main Street Architcture & Design Guidelines. These guidelines highlight community design priorities and strategies to respect local context, with flexibility for diverse architecture, cultural expression, creativity and innovation.

The guidelines were created after an extensive five-year grassroots public involvement process with the RNA, business association, and other Division neighborhood associations including public surveys, design studios with PSU, an inter-neighborhood design committee that met for 2-years, and a formal public community adoption process.

Following the guidelines may increase support by community members and reduce delays.

Development notification & community engagement POLICY

Developer Notification & Community Engagement Policy | Developed by the Richmond Neighborhood Association (RNA) and adopted by RNA, HAND, and STNA. This gives guidance on when to engage, what information to bring (e.g. context elevation) so community groups can understand context and impacts, and has a template for how to follow-up on community comments heard.

Early engagement in the “concept phase” is highly recommended before extensive investment is made in detailed drawings.

The more the community is engaged in giving early input, the greater the likelihood of a positive, collaborative process!

PROCESS FOR ENGAGING WITH RNA COMMUNITY

The following is recommended for all new development projects:

1) Review the design guidelines and the Development Notification policy.

2) Contact the RNA Chair and Land Use Committee to request a meeting with the community to present the project.

3) Attend a monthly RNA or Land Use Committee meeting to present the proposal. Share information in advance for distribution and handouts per the notification policy.

4) Provide a follow up letter to the RNA Chair and Land Use Committee with a summary of feedback heard and how it is addressed or not.
